The VCS v5.0 waiting list

For grid-connected solar registering under VCS v5.0 before 1 January 2027. Not sure that's you? Check in three minutes first.

Why 2027 matters

Verra publishes the rulebook most of the world's carbon projects are registered under. In 2026 it moved to version 5, and with it a new methodology — VMR0017 — covering grid-connected solar of any size.

That matters for two reasons.

The old rules close. Projects registering under the current version have until 1 January 2027. After that, new projects face requirements that must be met before construction begins — no use at all to a plant already running.

The new methodology reopened a market that had closed. Grid-connected solar had been effectively shut out of carbon markets on additionality grounds. VMR0017 regained its quality label in April 2026, conditional on each project passing a benchmark test. Projects that pass are worth many times more than those that do not.

So the window is real and narrow: register under the current rules before 1 January 2027, or accept a harder path afterwards.
